Video Game Review: Time Shift

TimeShift, it’s like playing with your DVD Player, only you can shoot people. In TimeShift, you play as a scientist who must stop the world from coming into control of a mad scientist, and plunging it into darkness, but you have the advantage, why? Maybe because you can control and alter time and space!

I know what you are all thinking, NOT ANOTHER TIME CHANGING GAME!!! There has been F.E.A.R, Price of Persia, Viewtiful Joe, and of course, the one that started it all: Blinx: The Time Sweeper (remember that old game). But although the features might not be original, the game play rocks harder than most time changing games. The Time-Changing idea may be pretty old, but this game brings it to a whole new level. Yeah, in F.E.A.R can slow down time, but in TimeShift you can also reverse, and fast-forward it as well. It’s still so cool to freeze time and then go around and shooting frozen enemies, especially when they are in the air or jumping over a fence. But it doesn’t just stop at freezing time. You see a bunch of enemies shooting you? Just reverse time and maneuver around them, that way you can catch them from behind. Threw a grenade and want to speed up the blowing up time before you get shot? Just fast- forward. Everything you want to become the ultimate weapon is there. Plus, the weapons are awesome. One of my favorites is the crossbow, which explodes once it hits an enemy, almost like Gears of War. Also, there’s a machine gun that comes with a grenade launcher. There is also a special move, where once you freeze an enemy, you can steal his gun and shot him with it, or just go old school and smack him. Overall, the gameplay is awesome. The ability to freeze time and shot enemies never gets old. And also, playing with time really does save you when you get in the worst positions. I love how you don’t have to go collect anything to freeze time, or gain health, it just automatically regenerates. Also, the online play is really entertaining. It’s really great to be able to play with other people, because sometime they might do something really creative that can help you when playing story mode. Another great part of the game is the environment. It all looks as though you are standing in a pile of rubble, as if you were in WWII, with rebels trying to fight back and escape the police, and huge robots patrolling the streets.

But unfortunately, all great games still have flaws. First of all, there are some really annoying puzzles in the game. I’m not saying that I’m so stupid that I can’t solve a little puzzle, because I’ve beaten God of War 1&2 on god mode, and those puzzles were incredibly hard. They are extremely easy and are just a waste of time. Also, the game is extremely challenging on hard mode. I say this, despite the fact that I can beat BLACK, another challenging game on hard. The problem with TimeShift is that it goes from normal, to very hard. But still, TimeShift is still a good game, and because it has a few flaws, it’s normal. It still has some of the best gameplay, and never gets boring. Anyone over the age of 17 can enjoy it, and if you don’t like it, SCREW YOU AND JUST BUY THE GAME!!!

Story: Scientists from the near-future have begun work on creating a viable time machine. The project results in the creation of two devices, the Alpha Suit, a less advanced prototype jump suit, and the Beta Suit, a more advanced, so-called military grade model with features the Alpha Suit lacks such as combat-related time shifting abilities and an integrated AI designed to prevent the creation of paradoxes. The director of the project, Doctor Aiden Krone, takes the Alpha Suit and travels into the past. Once there he alters the timeline, placing himself as the ruler of the Krone Magistrate that controls a dystopia world. You, a fellow scientist whose name is never spoken (never mentioned in-game or in manual), then takes the Beta Suit and follows Dr. Krone back to the year 1939 to a place called Alpha District. He then proceeds to assist the Occupant Rebellion against Dr. Krone, using the incredible powers of the Beat Suit to freeze, reverse, and fast forward time.
