What do you think of the kids in your classes? Do they misbehave or are they generally well-behaved?
Generally well-behaved…because I think the curriculum of IB art blends itself to a teenagers’ energy and its need to be free in the classroom…if they misbehave it’s behind my back when I’m not looking….oh, the eighth grade last year had a problem with their language and behavior so whenever they used some language that was not appropriate or treated each other with disrespect they would go clean. [note: he used to make us clean the sinks in the back of the classroom and the art utensils that were dirty in the sinks]
What were you considered as in school? (popular, nerdy, etc.)
I was shy…I had good friends, I wasn’t a loner…but, like, I was shy.
Ever broken a body part?
I tore a ligament in my ankle…playing soccer.
Who is the most influential person you know?
Um…I think I’m more influenced by people I don’t know…because most of my goals deal with art and no one I personally know is…I know a lot of people that are artists but they’re at the same level as me, like trying to…because I’m young trying to become an artist…I’m more influenced by older artists that I follow and whose work I enjoy.
What is your secret to keeping your class interesting?
Spontaneity….being spontaneous and allowing students to come up with ideas to influence the lesson of the unit….and having fun….and trying not to be like a normal class…a normal class is like when I was growing up you had to sit in your desk, you couldn’t talk and you had to memorize everything for your tests…um, there was no collaboration, there was no group projects, it was all memorizing.
Did you play any sports when you were in school?
Well, I played basketball, soccer, swimming, track and field.
Where are you from originally?
What’s your earliest childhood memory?
When I was maybe two…I was in the front of my house playing in the sprinkler and another little girl next door came over to play in the sprinkler with me and then her dad came out and yelled at her and made her come back to her house.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?
When I was really little some kid that came over my house to play like did something and I got angry so I bit him…I don’t know if that’s the stupidest thing but when you said that that’s what came to mind.
What’s your favorite type of junk food?
I like dark chocolate
What’s your favorite season? Why?
I like the summertime because I enjoy being outside…going to the pool, going to the beach…I like being in water…I wish I could be in water all the time.
What’s your favorite holiday? Why?
I like Christmastime because they show all the action movies…for some reason they’ve made a lot of action movies that happen at Christmastime so there’s a contrast of like, people shooting at each other with Christmas music in the background…and I think that’s a lot of fun.
Are you strict with your students?
Yeah. I’m strict with students that don’t respect me, or the classroom, or other students.
What makes you mad?
When people touch my computer screen with their fingers.
What are you really scared of?
Poison ivy…I’ve had it all over my body, it’s no fun.
What superpower would you love to have?
I think it would be cool as a teacher if I could turn into other things. Like, if I wanted somebody to be looser with their paint or material I could turn into a blob
What’s the best type of music? Favorite song?
Genuine music. I don’t have a favorite song.
What do you like to do on rainy days?
If you were stuck on a deserted island and you could only bring 5 things with you what would you bring?
A knife, so I can carve stuff. Some type of drawing material, paint, crayon, a pencil, of some sort. I guess I would need paper too. A surfboard and a barbeque.
What do you daydream about?
Random artistic ideas.
What was you last dream?
I was underneath this tree playing ping pong with every single person I ever knew and there was this big long line going through this big field…with everyone I’ve ever known in my whole life and they were all lining up to play against me and I was beating all of them…but my dream ended before I could beat everybody so they’re still waiting in line.
What do you love about yourself?
I’m honest, genuine, and respectful.
What’s a bad habit that you have?
I don’t clean my room.
What’s something that you don’t understand about life?
Why when people become adults they stop having fun and playing games…like sports, or board games, or making up new games, or making artwork, or just having fun… playing around
What B.S.G.E. teacher would you want to be stuck with on a deserted island?
Um….the next new teacher…so I can get to know them better and what a better way to get to know someone better then be stuck on a deserted island.
What if that person is crazy or a serial killer or something?
Then it will be an interesting time.
What would your dream vacation be like?
Traveling the world making artwork.

Would you ever dye your hair completely blue?
Sure…if I felt like it.

I’m a secret keeper.

I think, observant.
What’s your favorite place that you’ve visited?
Venice, Italy. Because I went there when I was in college to study painting and drawing and print making and art history and I got to live in the middle of the city and every day was like, an amazing experience and it confirmed, for me, that I was meant to be an artist.

Art because there is no other reason to live.
What’s the meanest thing you’ve ever done to anyone?
When I was in high school if there was someone I didn’t like I would completely ignore them even if they were trying to talk to me.
What makes you easy to work with?
Because I’m not stubborn and I’m flexible and I’m willing to listen to other people and take their ideas and fix my ideas.
I heard you go outside with the kids that have gym sometimes, why?
Because it’s fun to go play football or soccer and I get to know the students better. I don’t want to just be some person telling you what to do all the time. It’s fun to be collaborative and do things with you.
How did you decide to buy sneakers that are so colorful?
Because last year was my first year as a teacher and so I knew that the first impression with students is really important and so I took a chance and decided to get some crazy shoes and see what would happen…and I still buy them.
If you weren’t an art teacher, what other profession would you have chosen?
The first job I ever wanted to be is a garbage man because they would ride on the back of the truck and that looked really fun. I guess I’d want to be a lawyer because as an artist you practice your first amendment rights of the constitution, freedom of speech, so I practice it making art but as a lawyer I would get to defend people that maybe are accused of like…I would get to defend their first amendment rights.
Did you ever run away from home when you were younger?
Nope, I was a good kid. I probably thought about and I did get mad at my parents.
Any advice for us kids?
Um…to be genuine and do what you want to do and not let anyone else tell you what to do.
