BSGE Lady Sting drops high-scoring affair to Robert H. Goddard, 12-11 in first round of the Division B Playoffs

BSGE Lady Sting lost a battle of the bats on Wednesday at Big Bush Field, falling short in a 12-11 ballgame against Robert H. Goddard.

Nina Don was hot from the plate for BSGE Lady Sting. Don went 2-5, drove in one and scored three runs. She singled in the third inning and tripled in the seventh inning.

Vasquez recorded the win for Robert H. Goddard even though she allowed 11 runs over seven innings. She struck out four, walked seven and surrendered 11 hits.

Claire Bergerson ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. She allowed 12 runs in seven innings, walked three and struck out seven. Only one of the 12 runs were earned as BSGE committed nine errors on defense in the game.

The top of the first saw Robert H. Goddard take an early lead, 2-0. Robert H. Goddard pushed more runs across when Samoleski scored on a wild pitch.

Robert H. Goddard brought home one run in the third inning, and matched that run total in the sixth. In the third, Robert H. Goddard scored on an RBI single by Caputo, scoring Samoleski.

BSGE Lady Sting quickly matched Robert H. Goddard’s strong inning with a four-run inning of its own in the third. BSGE Lady Sting scored on an RBI single by Rakia Islam, an RBI single by Bergerson, and a two-run single by Jamie Carroll.

It didn’t take long for BSGE Lady Sting to answer as it scored four runs of its own in the fourth. BSGE Lady Sting scored on an error, an error, and a two-run double by Emily Costa.

The game’s last lead went to Robert H. Goddard thanks to a fifth inning rally that saw six runs cross the plate on two errors, a passed ball, and a groundout by Marino.

Two runs in the bottom of the sixth helped BSGE Lady Sting close its deficit to 12-10. A walk by Maya Juman and an RBI single by Kara Fallon fueled BSGE Lady Sting’s comeback. Robert H. Goddard stopped the rally after Vasquez got Angelica Benares to ground out.

One run in the bottom of the seventh helped BSGE Lady Sting close its deficit to 12-11. First baseman Emily Costa walked with two outs and was replaced no the basepaths by pinch runner Rena Kitagawa. Kitagawa stole second base on the following pitch but was thrown out trying to advance to third on a throwing error to end the inning.

Robert H. Goddard High School will move on in the NYC Division B playoffs while Lady Sting’s season is over.
