BSGE’s Middle School Math Competition Success

0319161235aBSGE’s middle school math team has been succeeding in numerous city and state math competitions this spring, led by Mr. Mehan. 8th graders Rachael Cheung, Christie Choi, SiLiang Lei and Christy Guan, as well as 7th grader Ahmed Shekani participated in the MathCounts citywide chapter competition on February 6th at IS 74, where the team won 2nd place. They moved on to the state finals, held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York on March 18th.IMG_1455

Separate from MathCounts, thirteen BSGE 7th and 8th graders have qualified to participate in MathCON, an academic competition run by Concept Schools in Chicago on April 23rd. Out of 44,000 applicants from 41 states across the country who took the initial, 564 were chosen to compete in the day-long event, including BSGE’s own Jonathan Chen ’21, Hanna Goo ’21, Megan Gupta-She ’21, Katherine Hlaing ’21, Steven Lee ’21, Ivan Rao ’21, Ahmed Shekhani ’21, Rishi Bhatt ’20, Rachael Cheung ’20, Aoife Kenny ’20, SiLiang Lei ’20, Chloe Pan ’20, and Benjamin Wong ’20.

The event, focused on encouraging students’ involvement in STEM fields, consists of a series of math-related activities through which the students win prizes, gift cards and national recognition. “We’re incredibly proud when any of our students earns recognition for their accomplishments, and we’re so excited to have these students represent BSGE at MathCON,” Principal Kelly Johnson said. “The STEM field is such an important part of the future, and we actively encourage our teachers and students to find fun ways to use STEM inside and outside of the classroom. This is a great honor not only for our students, but also for BSGE.”

Mr. Mehan also plans to participate in the Pi5NY Math Tournament on May 7th at the Armory, which will host over 1200 6th, 7th and 8th graders. BSGE will enter 2 teams of 5 7th graders each and 2 teams of 5 8th graders each.
