Running is a common form of exercise that many people around the world take part in either to lose weight or for personal enjoyment. The latter is seen in the case of Kohen Rahman 18’, who said: “BSGE really needed a running club. I decided to ask Tim about it because running is something I love to do. It’s a great way to let go with all the schoolwork we get in BSGE. I think BSGE’s Running Club is a great escape for all students, to just come and run.” After much persistence, Kohen had finally found a teacher that was interested in supervising the club. Timothy David-Lang, BSGE’s guidance counselor, enjoys running and has participated in several marathons in recent years. Mr. David-Lang realized that participating in the club would be a fun opportunity to help students learn how to run and also to help prepare for a race in May. Mr. David-Lang’s goal for the club is for them to be able to run a 5k, which is approximately 3.1 miles. In order for the members to accomplish this goal, Mr. David-Lang formulated a plan that would gradually increase the amount of activity over a 10 week period. The Running Club meets twice a week, stretching in the cafeteria before taking a jog through the streets of Astoria. Students as well as faculty members are still able to join the club at any time and can also follow the scheduled program advised by Mr. David-Lang if they don’t have the time to participate with the club.
Tom Brady addresses deflated football claims before the Super Bowl.
In the final game before Super Bowl XLIX, the AFC (American Football Conference) championship matchup consisted of the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots. The veteran duo of quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick were well-prepared to face rising star quarterback Matthew Stafford and coach Chuck Pagano after coming off a strong 12-4 season. Most NFL analysts and sports fanatics knew that the Patriots had more experience and that they would most likely win and head to the biggest game of the year. After D’Qwell Jackson of the Indianapolis Colts intercepted one of Tom Brady’s passes, he gave the ball to the Colts’ equipment manager. The equipment manager of the Colts noticed that there was a large difference in the balls that he prepared and the ball that Jackson had given him. The ball seemed to have been deflated, and was then given to the referees officiating the game. If the ball was deflated it would be easier to catch in the rainy weather, giving the Patriots’ offense an unfair advantage over the Colts’. The game finished with a score of 45-7, and the Patriots moved on to the Super Bowl. Even though the game was finished, the NFL decided to investigate the situation further. More…
During the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, the Helping Hands club decided to give students the opportunity to buy a candy, and send it to one of their friends or valentines as an act of kindness. Not only was it nice to send a candy to your friends the day before vacation, but the proceeds went towards The Center for Victims of Torture, a charity that helps people with different issues such as self hatred and chronic pain. The goal of this charity was to “restore the dignity of the human spirit.”
BSGE’s Bulletin Board Committee had the goal of fixing all of the school’s bulletin boards that need tending to. Margaret Pasach, the parent coordinator at BSGE, says that the main purpose of the Bulletin Board Committee is to help teachers that have a lot work. These teachers do not have enough time to display the achievements of classes so the committee does for the teacher. There are a total of 10 people on the bulletin board committee. Ms. Pasach says that it is important for the bulletin boards to look pleasant-looking as it makes the school environment more comfortable. After all of the bulletin boards are finished, the teachers have to request a new bulletin board if they want the Bulletin Board Committee to change the display.
The soccer team is a club that many students, teachers and parents are interested in joining, either to be a player or to be a coach for the team.
