You have most likely seen or heard about Smiskis or Sonny Angels, but what exactly are they and why are they so popular?
Before we dive into why Smiskis and Sonny Angels are so popular amongst BSGE students, there are a few background details that are important to understand about each of these collectibles.
Both collectibles consist of series, each series being a different topic that changes the features of Smiskis and Sonny Angels. For example, Smiskis have a series that is dedicated towards yoga and exercise, while Sonny Angels have a series for animals and fruit. The noticeable differences in Sonny Angels are the hats each collectible wears. Depending on the topic of the series, each hat will be different, however still focuses on the name. Smiskis however, have different poses and possibly attire. For the yoga series, each Smiski is in an accurate yoga pose.
Smiskis are small green collectables that can be attached to your phone, or hidden around your room. Smiskis were created in 2009, and blew up due to their adorable designs and their glow-in-the-dark feature. They originate from Japan and come in all different poses, sizes and different colors. There are currently 130-140 Smiskis, and seventeen series in total. Unlike Sonny Angels, one series is focused on yoga and exercise. Unfortunately, three series were discontinued due to low demand and popularity at the time. While the more common Smiskis are green, there are two series that are actually blue. There is also a touch light, keychains, ones that attach to zippers and bobbleheads. In comparison to Sonny Angels, Smiskis don’t actually have a slogan.
Sonny Angels were created in 2004 and their slogan is, “He May Bring You Happiness.” Sonny Angels have different types of headwear, and unlike Smiskis, are usually in the same pose. There is only one series of Sonny Angels that consist of the collectibles sitting down. Currently, there are a total of 1,482 Sonny Angels, with new ones still being made. There are currently eleven series of Sonny Angels so far, with more being created. Just like Smiskis, Sonny Angels have hippers as well.
Smiskis and Sonny Angels come from the same manufacturer, Dreams Inc. However, both are very different from each other. What is so special about them is that they come in blind boxes. Meaning that you do not know what kind you will get. In every series of both Smiskis and Sonny Angels, there is also a secret that is rare to unbox. This rare find can make a great addition to someone’s collection.
Two 8th graders stated that they enjoyed Smiskis and Sonny Angels because they believed that they are cute and, “all different.” One interviewee believed that they are lovable because “…they’re also relevantly cheap. Like 12 dollars.” Students ultimately believe that Smiskis and Sonny Angels will fade away as a trend, “I’m sure they’ll fade, but they’ve actually been popular for a long time now, so I think it’ll stay for a bit.”
Overall it appears that BSGE students adore Smiskis and Sonny Angels due to how small, cute and collectible they are.
