Artificial Intelligence I has rapidly become a frequently used tool in the domain of education. Students in schools, including BSGE, use AI in order to study, gather evidence, and create ideas. According to Campus Technology, around 86% of students have admitted to using AI for educational purposes. However, students also use AI to cheat on assignments, often having the robot write whole papers for them with no effort or work.
Wrongful utilization of AI creates an over-reliance on technology, which diminishes students’ ability to think for themselves and to use their critical reasoning skills. Students turn to AI for the smallest of assignments, causing them to be unable to develop their brain and can lead to future struggles in tests or courses.
Not only does AI limit students’ effort in school, it can also be misleading. AI often gives unreliable information. According to two BSGE eighth graders, “ChatGPT has given inaccurate evidence countless times” and “Gauth AI and Photomath constantly give wrong answers or explanations.”
Students also claim AI can be used to think of ideas, create study guides, and make plans for upcoming events. One BSGE junior high student said, “Whenever I need help in arguing or emails, ChatGPT is able to help me with that.”
The use of AI is highly controversial, as it is debated whether its purpose is solely for assistance and efficiency, or instead robs the young minds of current generations. Restrictions need to be put in place to keep AI in check and avoid student abuse. Students, according to another junior, don’t know when to trust AI due to its “Inconsistent answers, and varying quality of writing.”
The problem of AI is a huge factor in the decision of future classrooms. The Department of Education is currently having an imbalance of opinions regarding the teaching style of courses, tech VS traditional.
For example, technology based learning allows students to fix lessons to their own pace, have personalized tutoring, and have access to information they need. However, access to the internet isn’t always good, as shown by the controversy of AI. Traditional classrooms allow for students to interact more and have a sense of community, while also being kept under control within the rules. However, students often can’t get one on one attention and once they fall behind, it can be hard to get back on track.
AI comes into play by being a problem to tech-based classes. Once the DOE is able to determine whether the use of artificial intelligence lies on the good or bad side, or find a way to restrict ill intent use of it, they will be able to come to a conclusion on what our future looks like quickly.
