Manchester United. One of the biggest football clubs in the world. Having won three UEFA Champions League titles, Europe’s biggest and most prestigious international club competition, and 20 English top-division titles, the most out of any club at the moment, United has a history.
Managed by the great Sir Alex Ferguson, with the help of players like Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Vidic, and Rio Ferdinand, United had a period of great success from the 1990s to the early 2010s. However, after Sir Alex retired in 2013, the club completely collapsed. No Premier League or UCL titles have been won since then, and United have commonly finished outside the top 4 spots in the Premier League. Managers are constantly being sacked for failures, the latest being Erik Ten Hag. However, Ruben Amorim, a young and promising coach, has the potential to fix United. But he can’t do it with the current squad, which he called the worst in United history. The question remains, what players should Amorim sign, according to BSGE fans?
One player stands out above all. Viktor Gyokeres. The striker of Sporting Lisbon. He is a goal-scoring machine for them and can fix the goal-scoring problem that United has. However, that isn’t all. Before Amorim joined United in November 2024, Gyokeres was his preferred striker at Sporting. Gyokeres could work well with Amorim’s system, as he has experience in it. A 9th grader believes that “Gyokeres can fix United’s problems upfront, but I’m worried that he might take some time to adjust to the Premier League.”
Other than Gyokeres, other players that Amorim could sign are Victor Osimhen, another deadly striker, who was a part of Napoli’s league-winning squad in the 2022-23 season. A junior said “Osimhen is the guy that United needs right now. He is a striker who is always thirsty for goals and has great stats. However, he has spent some time in the Turkish league, so he would need some time to adapt to the Premier League.”
For the midfield, Amorim needs some crucial reinforcements. A player like Joshua Kimmich could be a good replacement for Casemiro, who is aging and has made some horrible mistakes while playing for United. A 10th grader said “Yes, Kimmich is good, but he is about to turn 30 a month later, and may only have 3-5 good years left in him. If I were Amorim, I would try to go for someone younger, like Vitinha from Paris Saint-Germain FC.”
As for the defense, Amorim should go for somebody like Maximilian Mittelstädt, who is at his prime and performs greatly for Stuttgart constantly. He could work greatly with de Ligt, Maguire, and the rest of the United defense.
Overall, Amorim needs to consider which area he should focus on for now. The attack is toothless, the midfield can’t create and is sometimes overrun, and the defense lets in a lot of goals. However, if he’s backed by the board, then he may have a shot of bringing United back to their former glory.
