Lights, camera, and… couch!?
The recently released movie K-Pop Demon Hunters has already captured the hearts of hundreds of millions of people all over the world. Within a span of three months, it has become Netflix’s most-watched film, with over 300 million views and mostly positive, supporting reviews.
The movie follows Zoe, Mira and Rumi, three idols in HUNTR/X, a K-pop girl group, who are generational demon hunters tasked with maintaining the honmoon (a shield protecting the world from demons). They face a major adversary, a K-pop boy band named the Saja Boys, and they prove to be their biggest demon opponents yet, with threats on the honmoon becoming ever more present.
We find out that Rumi, the main singer of the girl group, is half-demon. She pushes for the sealing of the honmoon to be quicker so that her identity is not revealed to the other members. Throughout the film, she grapples with the clashing of separate identities and forms a budding relationship with the leader of the Saja Boys, Jinu, who finds out about her secret.
Jinu and Rumi’s evolving relationship takes sudden twists and turns as their groups continuously clash against one another and Rumi’s identity is revealed to Zoe and Mira dramatically at HUNTR/X’s biggest concert, with the intent to seal the honmoon once and for all. Rumi’s secret comes out and she learns to embrace her identity once and for all after obliterating all of the demons in the movie with her girl group.
The movie paints a wonderful connection between Korean and American culture, with an emphasis on both. With American story-telling like an old-fashioned love story, yet with modern day themes and Korean mythology alongside culture, the movie really captures the souls of viewers with catchy tunes and the heart-wrenching story between Jinu and Rumi. To add on, the saddening ending of Jinu and the rest of the Saja Boys tied the story together, though it had a melancholic tone to it.
Not only has the movie been positively received by fans regardless of knowledge on K-pop, it has already birthed popular social media trends, even among other K-pop idols. For instance, the popular song “Soda Pop” sparked a dance trend when it was released all over social media, including giants like TikTok and Instagram.
In fact, every song from the movie went viral due to its catchy tunes. Songs like “Golden,” “How it’s Done” and “Your Idol” have grown in popularity since the beginning of the movie’s release due to their memorableness. Especially with the songs being a mix of both English and Korean, it combines two worlds together into one.
The songs had gotten so popular that some of the songs had even begun to outperform real songs by actual artists. One example of this is the Saja Boy’s “Your Idol” which briefly overtook BTS’s “Dynamite” on the United States Spotify chart.
K-Pop Demon Hunters is a movie that has captured the hearts of millions all over the world and it is not without reason to say that it has greatly influenced the way that people view Korean pop throughout the globe as well.
